Lot 546
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 16.47 g, 1 h), uncertain mint in the East, circa 325-300. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right. Gorny & Mosch E-Auction 267 (2019), 3129 corr. (same obverse die, but misattributed to Price 844 from a mint in Greece). Price 4004 (?). Some deposits and slightly rough. Very fine.

The attribution of the few tetradrachms of Alexander that carry no symbols or monograms is quite challenging. As a result, they get often lumped together under a single Price number in sales catalogues despite their vastly differing styles. Price in fact listed ten different issues, ranging from mints in Greece to the 'East'. Stylistically, our example certainly comes from an eastern mint as well, but it is currently not possible to narrow it down any further
